What is Imposterium and what kind of game is it?

Imposterium is a social deduction party game, a word-based take on who-is-the-spy. Everyone shares a secret word except one hidden impostor, and the group tries to unmask the bluffer.

How do you play?

Choose a category, deal the secret word to everyone but the impostor, give short clues in turn, discuss, then vote on who the spy is. The crew wins by catching the impostor; the impostor wins by surviving or guessing the word.

How many players do I need?

Imposterium works with 3 to 12 players. Small groups are quick and tense, while larger groups make the discussion and voting wonderfully chaotic.

Is it free?

Yes, Imposterium is completely free to play. There are no paid tiers or hidden costs blocking the game.

Do I need to download an app or create an account?

No. Imposterium runs entirely in your browser with nothing to install and no sign-up required. Open the page and you're ready.

How do I play online with friends?

Create a game and share the invite link, QR code or short join code. Your friends open it on their own phones, join your lobby and play from anywhere.

Can we play in person with just one phone?

Absolutely. In-person mode is pass-and-play on a single device, with players giving clues and voting out loud around the table. No second phone needed.

What is the impostor's goal and how does the impostor win?

The impostor doesn't know the secret word and must blend in. They win by surviving the vote without being caught, or by correctly guessing the secret word.

How does voting work?

After the clue and discussion phases, everyone votes for the player they suspect. Online you tap your choice; in person you vote out loud or by show of hands, then the result is revealed.

Which languages are supported?

Imposterium supports 10 languages for both the interface and the words: German, English, French, Albanian, Turkish, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and Serbian.

Can I make my own categories?

Yes. Type any topic and the AI generates a custom word list for it in your chosen language, on top of the built-in categories.

Is it good for family, kids, large groups and parties?

Definitely. The simple rules and adjustable difficulty make Imposterium great for families, classrooms, large groups and parties of up to 12 players.

How long does a round take?

A single round usually takes just a few minutes, and you can play as many rounds back to back as you like. It's easy to fit into any game night.

What devices does it work on?

Any device with a web browser works, including phones, tablets and computers. Imposterium is mobile-first, so it feels right at home on a phone.
